| Delirium | |||||||
| Delirium is an acute disturbance of consciousness and change in cognition (inattention) that is not accounted for by a pre-existing, established, or evolving dementia. The disturbance tends to fluctuate during the course of the day and is caused by the direct physiological consequences of a general medical condition.
Triggers D- Dehydration, dementia, detoxification/intoxication, diarrhea/constipation E- Electrolyte imbalance L- Lungs, liver, heart, kidney, brain (TIA, stroke, tumour) I- Infection (UTI, pneumonia) R- Recent loss, restricted movement, recent surgery with anesthesia I- Injury (fall, head injury, pain, hemorrhage, shock), improper fitting of hearing aid/glasses, improper sleep U- Unfamiliar environment (hospitalized) M- Medications: side effects, noncompliance, withdrawal (benzodiazepines, sedatives, hypnotics,), malnutrition, metabolic (blood sugars, thyroid, low vitamin B12, seizures) |
